Our Fathers’ Footsteps
Stories of World War II Veterans’ What If Moments
This book was inspired by my trip to Normandy for the 75th Anniversary of D-Day. I finally got the opportunity to see where my dad landed that historic day.
Our Fathers’ Footsteps follows the stories of four ordinary men who were amongst the millions of men and women from around the world who volunteered to serve their countries during World War II. These men all had one thing in common. They all landed on Normandy’s beaches on June 6, 1944.
With the assistance of these men’s families, using family history books, personal letters, journals and telegrams, these men’s ordeals are told. The use of their Regimental Diaries fills locations, dates and times of their stories. Dialogue has been added to help bring these men to life.
Each of the men in this story was caught up in the extraordinary circumstances of a world at war. Yet, they survived their “What If” moment, returning home and raising their families.
As I wrote about these soldiers, I felt I got to know them personally and realized I would have been proud to call each of them my friend.
